Looking forward to new terminal in South Carolina Ports

The new Hugh K. Leatherman Sr. Terminal, which prepares to open in March 2021, is taking shape along the Cooper River at South Carolina Ports.

More than 300 people — contractors, port employees, elected leaders and community members — cheered as a steel beam and tree were placed atop the steel structure as part of a traditional “topping out” ceremony, among them Senator Hugh K. Leatherman Sr., the terminal’s namesake.

The Leatherman Terminal is located on the former Navy Base in North Charleston. The facility of 54,000 sqm will have a wharf that will be able to accommodate up to 19,000 teu vessels.

The USD 1 billion investment comes at a time when S.C. Ports needs additional capacity to handle the larger ships calling at the port of Charleston. The first phase of the Leatherman Terminal provides an additional capacity of 700,000 teu. (mw)
