Lowest number of trucks crossing the Swiss Alps since 1999

In H1/2019, the number of trucks driving across the Swiss Alps declined by 2.5%. According to the Swiss Federal Office of Transport (FOT), the trend towards fewer truck journeys continues.

Because of construction works, the railways also transported fewer goods (-3.7%). Efforts to extend the profiles for various tunnels to accommodate cargoes with 4 m corner height led to some restrictions along the Gotthard axis. Nevertheless, the railways were able to maintain their market share of about 71%.

All in all, 465,000 trucks crossed the Swiss Alps in H1/2019. According to the FOT, this is the lowest level since 1999. (ben)
