Mombasa – Nairobi line to be electrified
The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketarco) has signed a USD 240 million contract with China Electric Power Equipment and Technology Company for the electrification of the standard gauge rail (SGR) line over the next 28 months.
Diesel locomotives are currently deployed on Kenya's SGR railway, which was designed for the addition of a single electric line that will be connected to Ketarco’s 482 km long 400kV Mombasa-Nairobi transmission line, the longest and highest voltage transmission infrastructure in East Africa.
Kenya’s SGR was officially inaugurated in summer 2017. Commercial freight operations on the line began in January 2018. (ben)
