Mongolia: new railway for huge freight volumes
A foundation stone ceremony recently kicked off construction work on the Ceke railway in Mongolia. The project is China’s first cross-border normal gauge railway. The new railway between China and Mongolia is routed through the port of Ceke and forms one component of the “belt and Road” initiative to rejuvenate the old Silk Road.
The Ceke line will be directly connected to the major international Beijing-Moscow and Siberia-Europe rail routes. According to the Chinese press, the Ceke line will be used to transport some 30 million t of freight per year. (ben)
