More freight moving by trucks
The amount of freight, measured in tons, moving on the USA’s transport network will grow by 40% in the next three decades while the value of the freight will almost double (+92%).
By 2045, freight tonnage across all transport modes – air, vessel, pipeline, rail, and trucks – is projected to reach 25 billion t while the value is expected to grow to USD 37 trillion, according to projections compiled by the US bureau of transportation statistics and the federal highway administration.
Trucks are by far the single most-used mode to move freight, moving 64% of tonnage in 2015 and 69% of the value. Tonnage for trucking is forecast to grow by 44% by 2045 and the value is forecast to increase by 84%. (ben)
