More speed and higher axle load in Lithuania


"Lithuanian Railways" has awarded a EUR 51.1 million contract for the improvement of the Lithuanian section Livintai – Gaiuiunai to the JV of Eurovia CS, Eurovia Lietuva and UAB Gelezinkelio Tiesimo Centras.

 

The railway section is situated within the Pan-European corridor IX, which connects the main cargo and logistics centres of Lithuania – the port of Klaipėda and Vilnius, the country's capital. The project includes the construction of 10.7 km of new railways as well as the reconstruction and modernisation of 10.7 km of existing railways.

 

The project will increase the speed of the freight trains from 90 km/h to 120 km/h and the axis load from 22.5 t to 25 t. The completion of the project is planned for the fourth quarter of 2022. (ben)
