New airport for Nouakchott
Nouakchott has a new international airport. Nouakchott-Oumtounsy (NKC) is around 20 km from Mauritania’s capital and replaces its congested predecessor which has been swallowed up by urban sprawl.
The facility, inaugurated by Turkish Airways, has two runways (4.3 and 2.6 km long) and a freight terminal. The building costs were not disclosed, but the government, which is organising the 27th Arabian League summit at the end of July, said it was the largest project that the country in northwestern Africa had achieved since it became independent in 1960.
