New contract leads to significant CO2 reductions
The newly-formed container shipping company Ocean Network Express (ONE), and Freightliner, a subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming, have signed a contract for guaranteed rail wagon capacity on main intermodal routes in the United Kingdom. By switching from road to rail, the new contract will see 190,418 road kilometres per day removed from UK roads, reducing greenhouse gasses by 67% in comparison to traditional road transport.
In addition, ONE will save 180 t of CO2 a day on inland transport, representing a 13% increase compared to when the three Japanese shipping companies in ONE– namely MOL, NYK and K-Line – operated independently of each other. (ben)
