New direct Helsinki–Rostock service - Finnlines upgrades Rostock
Finnlines, a member of the Naples-based Grimaldi Group, has launched a direct connection between Helsinki and Rostock. It also started a new link from Rostock via Zeebrugge to Bilbao recently. The measures have been designed to reinforce Finnlines’ Rostock strategy.
Finnlines’ service between Rostock, Gdynia and Helsinki has been running since the end of 2009. «After more than three years of indirect services it will now be operated as a direct link between Helsinki and Rostock,» Finnlines president and CEO Uwe Bakosch said recently. He added that «the schedule is integrated into that of the European railway network in the hinterlands of Rostock and Berlin, combining with the passenger segment.» Finnlines has additionally started providing a new weekly service from Rostock to Bilbao via Zeebrugge. The link aims to offer a safer, more economical and more environment-friendly alternative to the overland route from Rostock to destinations in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and northern Spain.
