New heart for Port of Long Beach

The completion of the Middle Harbor redevelopment project in the Californian Port of Long Beach has transformed two aging terminals into one of the world’s most technologically advanced container terminals. The new Long Beach Container Terminal at Middle Harbor has a handling capacity of 3.3 million teu annually.

Built in three phases, the terminal represents an investment of nearly USD 1.5 billion in infrastructure by the port and another USD 700 million in cargo handling equipment, computer and software systems and workforce training.

Three 14,000 teu ships can plug into shore power and be worked simultaneously. Fourteen ship-to-shore cranes, each of which can discharge or load four teu at the same time and handle up to 35 container moves per hour, are in operation. The Long Beach Container Terminal also has the on-dock rail yard capacity to move more than 1 million teu annually. (cd)
