New tool for ship management at Lisbon and Setubal

The Finnish company Wärtsilä has completed the installation of a digital tool called vessel traffic service (VTS) for the management of ship traffic in the ports of Lisbon and Setubal (Portugal). It has also trained the personnel for the operation of this system, which will reduce waiting times for ships and “on-the-spot” interventions of pilot vessels.

The tool was developed by Transas, a company specialising in software solutions for fleet and traffic management which was acquired by Wärtsilä in March 2018. This project began in July 2018 and was completed in January 2019. It includes, among other elements, two ship traffic control centres and seven remote sites with sensors. (kd)
