North American freight drops 6.2% in September
Estimated transborder freight between the US, Canada and Mexico totalled USD 127.8 bn in September 2025, marking a 6.2% decrease from the previous year. Truck transport saw a 9.2% decline, moving USD 80.3 bn, while rail dropped 2.2% to USD 16.7 bn. Freight via pipelines (-15.2%), vessels (-0.5%) and air (+0.14%) also experienced decreases or minimal growth.
The US-Mexico corridor bore the brunt with a 9.7% fall, totalling USD 65.5 bn, whereas US-Canada freight decreased by 2.3% to USD 62.3 bn. Key ports include Laredo, Detroit and Buffalo for US-Canada traffic and Laredo, El Paso, and Otay Mesa for US-Mexico. The top commodities are vehicles, mineral fuels, computers and electrical machinery. These estimates, derived due to a temporary data lapse, will be revised when official data resumes in January 2026.
