Oman: railway construction to start in 2018
Oman Rail wants to start construction work on its 2,135 km long national rail network in 2018, and put part of the network into service two years later, according to the local press. The design of the rail network is expected to be completed this year and tenders will be awarded in 2017.
Oman’s USD 11 billion rail project is part of a wider proposed trans-Gulf rail network linking its borders with the UAE to Muscat, as part of the GCC railway network, and also to Oman’s southern regions where the ports of Al Duqm and Salalah are located, as well as the Yemen border.
The maximum speeds of freight trains on the twin track rail line will be 120 km/h. (ben)
