Overtime in Savannah

Not all ports are effected by strikes and shutdowns. At the beginning of its fiscal year, the US East Coast Georgia Ports (GPA) processed almost 531,000 teu in one month. This July saw a throughput 18% higher than the same month last year.

The employees and partners are the key to handling these volumes. The GPA has shifted operations to start two hours earlier, with gates open from 04.00 h 21.00 h without interruption. Since the new schedule was implemented on 1 August 2022, the port has seen 3,000 transactions completed in the 04.00 h to 06.00 h time slot.

Since January, GPA has moved 3.4 million teu, an uptick of 231,000 or 7% compared to its throughput during the same period in 2021. GPA executive director Griff Lynch saw "cargo diverted from the US West Coast" as one reason for the rising volumes in Savannah. (sh)
