Port of Antwerp sets its sights on green multi-fuel

In 2019, the Belgian port of Antwerp scored strong growth for the seventh year in a row. Total freight volume increased by 1.3% to 238 million t. Container throughput was particularly impressive in Antwerp, totalling 11.87 million teu and achieving a 6.9% increase in market share – from 27.5% to 28.2%.

At the same time, the dry bulk segment saw its total volume expand by 3.4% to 13.5 million t. In the break bulk and liquid bulk segments volumes were down, however. In 2020 Antwerp intends to pave the way towards a carbon-neutral port.

In the near future, it will be experimenting with tugboats powered by methanol hydrogen. The port will also further digitalisation projects and aim at increasing the share of rail traffic from 7% to 15% by 2030. (ben)
