Port of Savannah launches mid-American arc project
Griff Lynch, executive director of the port of Savannah GA (USA), reported a record number of container moves for the Georgia port authority (GPA) in August. The total came to 330,846 teu, 5% more than in August 2015. Taken together, the GPA terminals handled 2.62 million t in August, an increase of 117,470 t or 4.7%.
GPA now wants to implement its mid-American arc plan that focuses on establishing more intermodal rail connections with the US hinterland. Another key feature is the USD 128 million rail expansion at Garden City Terminal. The upgrade will provide the possibility for CSX and Northern Southern to build over 900 m long trains for 500 containers.
The port of Savannah international multi-modal connector will link the Garden City Terminal's two rail yards and grow the terminal's rail lift capacity to approximately 1 million containers per year. The construction project will create a new on-port rail facility within the terminal's current grounds by 2020.
