PTC interoperability is a challenge

The class I US rail road Union Pacific (UP) has implemented positive train control (PTC) on 937 route kilometres, thus raising its required PTC-operated route kilometres to 21,882 or 80%.

The railway will continue its implementation efforts to ensure PTC interoperability with other railroads operating on UP tracks by 2020, as allowed by federal law.

One of the most challenging parts of PTC implementation is ensuring system interoperability among all US rail lines and locomotives, UP said.

Given the various readiness levels of North American railroads, it is important that all railroads continue working together to maintain the safety and fluidity of the rail network during PTC implementation. (ben)
