Reducing coal train congestion at port of Newcastle

The construction of five new railway tracks at Newcastle port in NSW Australia will start in November. Once built, the new railway tracks will help remove train bottlenecks at the port and allow trains to be temporarily diverted off the main tracks while they wait to enter loading facilities in the harbours.

Each of the five tracks will be about 2 km long and provide space for two or three locomotives and up to 90 wagons. The AUD 163 million (EUR 113 million) project is being delivered by the Upper Hunter Valley Alliance on behalf of Australia’s government-owned Australian Rail Track Corporation. Project construction is scheduled to take 15 months. (ben)
