Singapore splurging out on staff
In an attempt to attract local talent for the maritime sector, Singapore's maritime and port authority (MPA) is to inject another SGD 65 million (USD 47 million) into the maritime cluster fund - manpower development (MCF-MD) programme.
With this new input, the funds invested under this programme since 2007 reach SGD 115 million (USD 83 million). The additional wherewithal will be used to introduce new initiatives, and step up existing efforts.
The MPA established the MCF-MD programme in 2002 to facilitate the growth of Singapore's maritime cluster. It focuses on growing a strong Singaporean core by supporting maritime companies in the development of manpower, training initiatives and capabilities. As of 31 December 2014, about 20,000 people have benefitted from the co-funding of training programmes supported by the MCF-MD scheme.
