Spanish airport going for a song
Aeropuerto Central Ciudad Real, Spain’s first privately operated airport that was opened in November 2008, can be bought for EUR 100 million. The facility, founded as Don Quijote airport, is somewhat more than 200 km from the country’s capital Madrid and was originally intended to relieve that city’s Barajas airport and, with freight handling capacities of up to 50,000 t per year, act as a new gateway to southern Spain. However, due to weak business, the around EUR 1.1 billion investment “tilted and lost against windmills” and became insolvent in June 2010. Commercial operations ended in October 2011 and the airport closed down completely in April 2012.
