Spanish Ports look back in joy
2015 was a “sunny” year for the 28 state-owned Spanish port authorities. The overall throughput reached a record high of 488.1 million t, up 4.3% on 2014. When fishing supplies and domestic traffic are included, the total tonnage amounted to 501.8 million t. This year Spain’s ports aim to raise their throughput by 2.3% to 513.5 million t. The movement of containers in transit remained at a similar level to 2014.
General cargo, which reached the record level of 224.4 million t (+3%), grew noticeably in Valencia (+7.5%), Baleares (+6.8%) and Barcelona (+6.5%), but only slightly in Algeciras (+2.1%). The ro-ro sector registered 51.1 million t (+6.4%) in 2015, 70.7% of that cargo was split between Barcelona, Baleares, Valencia and Algeciras.
