Spanish ports still strong - except for boxes


In H1/2017, Spain’s ports moved 255.1 million t of merchandise, 3.9% more than in H1/2016. All sectors registered growth, apart from the container business, which shrank slightly.

 

After subtracting the volume of goods in transit, the Spanish ports handled 191 million t in H1/2017, 3.5% more than in H1/2016. A total of 110.4 million t, or 43.3% of all the cargo in H1/2017, passed through the ports of Algeciras (46.1 million t), Valencia (36 million t) and Barcelona (28.3 million t).

 

In terms of growth, Barcelona and Las Palmas took the lead with increases of 25.3% and 20.5% respectively. Moderate growth was registered by the Balearic Islands ports (+ 6.8%), Bilbao (+ 4.9%) and Valencia (+ 1.9%). Cargo throughput at Algeciras fell by 7.6%. These six ports moved 84.2% of the overall volume. (kd)
