Spatial planning framework for Swiss regional airport

The Swiss federal council has approved the object sheet of the aviation infrastructure plan for the regional airport in Samedan (SMV, Switzerland). This stamp of approval replaces the object sheet of 2002 and determines the spatial planning framework for the long-term development of one of the highest-lying airports in Europe (1,707 m above sea level). To begin with, the airport plans to launch flight services based on instrument flight rules.

Recently, there have been major changes with regard to the demands placed on the infrastructure and the operation of the airport. Therefore, the airport owner, Engadin Airport, is pursuing a new development strategy to upgrade the airport and improve the accessibility of the Upper Engadine.

The outdated infrastructure (some of it dates back to the times of the military airfield) and various provisional buildings are to be replaced and enhanced.
