Study recommends increasing heavy vehicle widths

On the basic of a new study, Austroads in Australia supports increasing the maximum allowable heavy freight vehicle width from 2.5 m to 2.55 m (including attachments). According to the research organisation, there is a substantial fleet of heavy freight vehicles already entitled to operate in Australia with a width of 2.55 m through exemptions or permits.

This results in productivity impacts, additional regulation and administration costs in getting approvals. Austroads said that a majority in the industry supports a change to a maximum truck width of 2.55 m. The Australian trucking association is bemused and concerned at Austroads’ decision, according to a press release. (ben)
