Super lorries – no replacement for trains
In the longer and heavier vehicle (LHV) field trials that are currently taking place in Germany, no companies have so far used the super lorries as an alternative to railfreight. The LHVs have been solely deployed to haul goods that are traditionally carried by conventional trucks.
These findings were revealed in a survey compiled by Germany’s federal highway research institute. Nearly 17% of all the monitored trips were carried out as part of an intermodal service. As pre and post feeder trips to an intermodal terminal are relatively short, the LHVs only accounted for 6% of the entire transport performance (measured in tonne kilometres). (ben)
