TFR and CFM to launch borderless train service

In a historic development, the South African carrier Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) and the Mozambique rail operator Caminhos De Ferros De Mocambique (CFM) have signed an in-principle agreement that will enable an uninterrupted passage of all freight trains between the two countries. The new operating model is scheduled to go live on 1 April 2023.

The new solution will significantly reduce transit times, TFR said. The agreement follows a 90-day test run which demonstrated that the model allows a more efficient operating on this route.

It is part of TFR’s North-East Corridor and a key export link for export commodities such as magnetite, chrome, ferrochrome, rock phosphate and coal. (ben)
