The "Bertha" arrives in Seattle

The port of Seattle has taken delivery of the largest tunnel boring machine (TBM) ever made, the "Bertha". The machine is named after Seattle’s first female mayor, Bertha Knight Landes, elected in 1926. Jumbo Shipping, a heavylift specialist from the Netherlands, shipped the machine from Osaka. The TBM consignments consisted of 48 pieces, weighing 7,777 t overall and measuring 31,600 cbm. The heaviest item was close to 900 t. The "Bertha" will dig the SR99 tunnel beneath downtown Seattle, which is expected to open in 2015.
