Tiger grants to improve freight network and facilities

The USA department of transport has approved new Tiger grants of about USD 46 million for rail projects in several states.

Oklahoma, for example, has been granted USD 9.9 million to make much-needed improvements to the regional freight network. The money will go a long way towards upgrading 17 bridges and 212 km of track to accommodate longer, heavier trains in the state's western region.

Other recipients are Baltimore county, Indiana, New Mexico and Maryland. The latter state received USD 20 million to help Trade Point Atlantic redevelop a former Sparrows Point steel mill site where the company will add an upgraded crane rail system to allow direct transfer of cargo from vessels to rail or truck.
