Turkmenistan to build major port
The energy-rich country Turkmenistan has launched a USD 2 billion project to build a new port on the Caspian Sea designed to boost exports. The country's president, Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, and the Turkish prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, attended a ceremony in the western town of Turkmenbashi where the new port will be built by the Turkish construction firm Gap Insaat.
The new port in Turkmenbashi will mainly be used to export oil products and liquefied gas, as well as for textiles in containers. The annual freight turnover at the port is expected to reach 25 million t by 2020 compared with today's 10 million t, according to Turkmen government data.
