Urumqi and Naples connected by rail

Thanks to a new railfreight service, citizens of Naples (Italy) will find it easier to buy commodities produced in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in northwest China.

The first train, hauling tomato sauce, left Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, for Naples last week (wk 9). The train will pass through the Horgos Pass before continuing on a combined sea-rail route.

The 10,500 km trip will take 25 days, half that of the customary transit time by sea alone. The number of China-Europe freight trains grew to over 3,600 last year, a record high, according to China’s state-owned information office. (ben)
