US short-line railroad to cut emissions

A US short-line railroad has received a grant to help it reduce its emissions. In cooperation with the Cimarron Valley Railroad (CVR), the Kansas department of transportation (KDOT) has been awarded a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for auxiliary power units on the CVR’s seven locomotives. The grant award is USD 127,536, and CVR is contributing USD 191,305 in matching funds.

The auxiliary power units on the locomotives will reduce idling hours and emissions, save diesel fuel and will improve railroad operating efficiencies.

CVR is owned by Jaguar Transport Holdings and operates more than 300 track km extending into Oklahoma and Colorado. The railroad interchanges with BNSF Railway in Dodge City. (ben)
