Using AI to improve the loading of trains

The German Federal ministry for digital affairs and transport (BMDV) has earmarked EUR 8.3 million to fund three projects for intelligent applications in mobility and logistics. This includes Kombiverkehr's large-scale Kiba project, which started in November.

The aim is to improve loading operation for train wagons with the help of artificial intelligence. The assignment of the loading unit, such as truck trailers to rail wagons in combined transport, is to be optimised automatically, taking into account the complex loading rules and the availability of suitable rail wagons.

AI is used to forecast the expected loading units, which allows to optimise the composition of the trains, coordinated with nationwide timetables, BMDV explained. (ben)
