Wagons whispering in Austria
Rail Cargo Group says that around 40% of the wagon fleet it deploys in Austria is quiet. By the end of 2021, the freight railway wants to have equipped more than 90% of its vehicles in Austria with noise-reducing technology.
To fulfil this aim, freight wagons have to be fitted with “whisper” brakes that have brake pads made of rubber and copper composites. This measure reduces noise from the railway by up to 10 dB.
Railcargo says that its trains with quiet freight cars are about half as loud as those that haul wagons with cast iron brakes. (ben)
