Wairoa-Napier line to reopen at year end

Work has begun on the reinstatement of the Napier to Wairoa railway line in New Zealand. The first log train is expected to run on the line by the end of the year.

It is six years since the Wairoa - Napier line was in regular use but Kiwi Rail has been working with Hawke’s Bay regional council and Napier Port to re-open the line.

The country's government recently announced the reopening and allocated NZD 5 million (EUR 2.93 million) to the project, which is expected to take two years to fully complete.

It’s estimated that the Wairoa-Napier line could take up to 5,714 trucks a year off the road, and reduce carbon emissions by 1,292 t. (ben)
