World trade on the rise

The container throughput index of the German RWI – Leibniz institute for economic research and the institute of shipping economics and logistics (ISL) showed a robust improvement in September, rising from (corrected) 116.5 to 119.7 points.

The uptick was felt in Chinese ports as well as on a global level again. The northern range of Europe index, which is an indicator for economic development in northern Europe, went up to 111.6, still below the level of September 2019.

The current flash estimate for the container throughput index is based on data from 64 ports which handle around 85% of the throughput described in the index.

The RWI/ISL container throughput index for October 2020 will be published on 24 November 2020. RWI economic director Torsten Schmidt said: "Global container handling has partially passed the level of the period before the corona crisis started." (cd)
