Dear readers,

The leading French logistics trade fair Sitl is upon us again, with this year’s edition scheduled for 19 – 21 March in Paris. It is being held under the motto “the paths of change” and has reserved no less than 3,000 m2 of its exhibition space to illustrate the transformation of the industry. The question whether an innovation actually leads in the right direction and can be used sustainably must of course be proven in practical tests.

Unfortunately France’s first ‘solar road’, which was built in Normandy in 2016, didn’t pass said practical test. Thus it’s now being restored to its original state – amid some derisive comments. The idea of integrating photovoltaic cells into the road surface to generate green electricity has something dazzling about it. In the end, however, it turned out that the system’s yield was too low and the parts were subject to too much wear and tear from road users. The operator is now planning to build solar roads for use by cyclists and pedestrians instead of cars and lorries.

Here’s to an inspiring read!

Yours,

Andreas Haug
