100-day warning for EU ETS deadline
With only 100 days left until the September 30 EU ETS deadline, the Columbia Group has warned shipowners of serious risks. "Fines, access restrictions and reputational damage are imminent," said Philippos Ioulianou, managing director of EmissionLink.
By March, under 40% of companies had submitted verified emissions data. The scheme’s national implementation is clashing with shipping’s global reality, complicating EUA acquisition and cost allocation. Some managers absorb the risk hoping for later charterer reimbursements.
As ETS coverage rises from 40% to 100% by 2026, Ioulianou stresses digital tools like 'EmissionLink' can help, but warns: "The next 100 days will separate the proactive from the unprepared." (ah)
