7,000 new wagons for hauling more oil barrels

The government in Alberta (Canada) wants to move more oil by rail. The goal is to create enough new rail capacity to move 120,000 barrels a day out of the province to various markets.

To achieve this aim, Alberta is preparing to buy 7,000 rail cars and roughly 80 locomotives, with each train pulling 100 to 120 cars. The first wagons are expected to start transporting oil late next year. The full complement of cars will be available in 2020.

This additional capacity and dedicated service will also ensure that agricultural products, including grain, will not be affected by having to compete for space on existing trains. (ben)
