Dead butterflies from Portugal

US Customs and Border Protection agriculture specialists intercepted a collection of 60 dead adult moth and butterfly specimens of the order lepidoptera on 3 May 2024. The unique shipment, which arrived from Portugal and was destined to an address in Wayne County, PA, violated wildlife import laws. CBP turned the specimens over to the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

CBP agriculture specialists have extensive training and experience in the biological sciences and agricultural inspection, and they inspect tens of thousands of international air passengers, and air and sea cargo being imported to the United States every day.

During a typical day, CBP agriculture specialists in the USA seized 2,677 prohibited plant, meat, animal byproducts, and soil, and intercepted 240 insect pests at US ports of entry. (cj)
