DHL and Hapag-Lloyd decarbonise fuel use

DHL global forwarding and Hapag-Lloyd have signed a three-year framework agreement to reduce Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions in ocean freight through the use of alternative marine fuels. The partners executed their first order in July, achieving a 25,000 t CO₂e well-to-wake reduction by using second-generation biofuels derived from waste and residue feedstock.

The agreement applies the 'book and claim' mechanism, allowing customers to attribute emission savings to their supply chains seperatly from the use of the fuel. DHL sees this decoupling as a key tool to accelerate decarbonisation, given the limited and costly global supply of sustainable fuels. Hapag-Lloyd has set a target of net-zero fleet emissions by 2045, while DHL aims for net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. (js)
