First quay cranes arrive in Papua New Guinea

South Pacific International Container Terminal (SPICT), a unit of International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) located in the Port of Lae, can now handle larger box ships, thanks to the arrival there of two new ship-to-shore cranes, the largest port-handling equipment ever to be deployed in Papua New Guinea.

The new post-panamax cranes, manufactured by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry and with a reach of up to 17 rows across, can serve 6,000 teu vessels. They are a part of ICTSI’s programme to enhance the operational efficiency of PNG’s leading container terminal.

With the new equipment, shipping lines can expect quayside productivity gains and shorter port stays. SPICT will soon be able to handle direct calls by larger vessels operating in the major trade routes, which could reduce costs for both importers and exporters in the region.
