German rail sector tackles skills gap

The first 15 graduates of Germany’s overhead line fitter training initiative (Ausbildungsinitiative Oberleitungsausrüster, Aola) have completed their one-year programme, aimed at addressing the rail sector’s skills shortage.

The scheme, launched by eight companies, including DB Bahnbau Gruppe, Europten and Rail Power Systems, alongside the German Railway Industry Association, trains qualified personnel for electrification work.

The partners pool resources such as trainers, materials and training sites to speed up qualification. The programme ran from September 2024 to August 2025; the next course starts in November, shortened to six months to allow multiple runs per year and increase participant numbers. (js)
