Gothenburg breaks container records

The port of Gothenburg has reported it is on course for a record year in 2025, with container volumes rising by 4% in the first three quarters to 709,000 teu – the highest in the port’s history for the period. Growth is driven mainly by imports, while balanced flows have reduced the number of empty containers. "It’s been a fantastic year so far, especially for container traffic," said Claes Sundmark, vice president sales at the port. "Many other ports in northern Europe are currently struggling with capacity issues, which plays to our advantage,” he added.

Rail volumes also rose 4% to 393,000 teu, now accounting for over 60% of all container traffic, supported by hinterland links across Sweden. Ro-ro volumes increased by 1% to 394,000 units, while car handling fell 9% to 172,000 units and energy products dropped 7% to 15.2 million t, though September saw a 22% rebound according to the port.
