Gridlock on road network

In Switzerland, the number of hours spent in traffic jams rose sharply last year. According to statistics published by the Swiss confederation, 30,230 congestion hours were reported in 2019, 10% more than ever before.

Transport services providers must thus calculate much more time for the same volume of orders, the Swiss road transport association Astag said. The main reason for the increasing number of traffic jams is that the transport networks, which were planned back in the 1960s, are overcrowded.

Furthermore, the situation has worsened with the Covid-19 crisis this year, as large parts of the population have switched from public transport back to their own cars. Astag therefore calls for the immediate expansion of the road networks in all parts of the country. (ben)
