India opens another railfreight section

The first good trains are running between Bhaupur and Khurja in Uttar Pradesh along India’s eastern dedicated freight corridor (EDFC). India’s PM Modi recently flagged off the first goods train and also opened the operation control centre at Prayagraj.

The new 351 km stretch can accommodate trains measuring a length of almost 1.5 km. The EDFC is a 1,856 km long rail line between Ludhiana in Punjab) to Dankuni in West Bengal. This route has coal mines, Thermal power plants and industrial cities.

With the construction of freight corridors, India’s freight trains are able to increase the speed threefold and to carry double the volume of goods. (ben)
