Maritime safety gaps emerge with EV boom

The surge in electric vehicle (EV) shipments is exposing significant gaps in maritime safety regulations, with high-profile vessel fires underscoring the risks of lithium-ion battery combustion. Current IMO guidelines are inadequate to address these hazards, and comprehensive regulations are not expected until at least 2028. In response, shipping companies are independently enhancing safety measures, including specialised fire suppression systems, crew training and best practice collaborations.

Industry experts highlight the importance of proactive compliance and shared knowledge, emphasising that training crews to identify early signs of battery fires and using advanced suppression technologies are crucial. Until new regulations are implemented, the maritime community must continue to adapt and cooperate to prevent future incidents, with a focus on preparedness and innovation to address the evolving risks posed by EV transportation.
