More accidents on Ukrainian Railways
The number of accidents on railway tracks and crossings in Ukraine rose to 73 between January and October 2013, 4.3% more year-on-year. All of the accidents were caused by vehicle drivers who contravened traffic rules when crossing rail tracks. The majority of cases (65 in all) happened on crossings and eight on the tracks. Sixteen people died and 21 were injured as a result of the incidents.
On top of that, 222 cases of illegal interruptions of the railways' work occurred during the first ten months of 2013. There are 5,422 railway tracks and crossing points in Ukraine, 4,168 of which are equipped with an automatic crossing signalling system, and 1,497 have operators on duty. (ben)
