Port of Bilbao expanding ecosystem monitoring
The Bilbao Port Authority and the University of the Basque Country have renewed their collaboration to continue biomonitoring the port ecosystem.
A new four-year agreement, worth EUR 785,000, includes phytoplankton surveillance for the first time, adding to existing studies of benthic communities and water quality.
The university has supported the port in assessing marine biodiversity and physical-chemical parameters from 21 stations since 1994. Three new sites will track phytoplankton near liquid bulk, container and general cargo docks.
The project offers a scientific basis to evaluate the environmental status of the port area. Recent results show improved ecosystem maturity, with limited impact from port operations.
