Port Otago expands rail

Port Otago has officially opened a NZD 13m rail pad at the Port Chalmers container terminal, attended by three government ministers and regional leaders. The project is linked to an NZD 8.2m loan to construct an additional rail pad at the Southern Link inland port in Mosgiel by late 2026. Southern Link is a joint venture between Port Otago and Dynes group.

Port Otago CEO Kevin Winders said the new rail connection reflects the company’s 'space to grow' strategy. Rail minister Winston Peters noted that the existing siding already supports 60% of containers at Port Chalmers, cutting 43,000 truck trips last year. A further 19,000 are expected to shift when the inland port opens. "Inland freight hubs provide vital additional space away from busy coastal ports," added Peters. (js)
