Qatari commitment for Syrian aviation

Syria has signed a USD 4 billion mou with a Qatar-led consortium to redevelop Damascus international airport (DAM), a five-phase project that will add modern cargo terminals, larger aprons and upgraded air navigation systems to handle higher freight volumes and improve turnaround efficiency.

Alongside expanded passenger capacity, the investment targets Syria’s reintegration into regional and global trade flows, positioning Damascus as a strategic hub between the Gulf, Levant, and Europe. The plan includes USD 250 million for ten Airbus A320s for Syrian Airlines and upgraded ground handling. Partners are UCC Holding, US and Turkish firms.

Complementing the redevelopment, Qatar Airways resumed Aleppo (ALP) services on 10 August, increasing from three to four weekly flights on 1 September, adding bellyhold capacity to its 170-plus destination network via Doha.

The combined moves are expected to boost high-value and time-sensitive cargo flows, particularly perishables, pharmaceuticals and automotive components, supporting Syria’s broader economic recovery. (ah)
